Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan proposed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to start consultations on signing a peace treaty agreed by both sides.
“The draft peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been agreed and is awaiting signing. I propose to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to start consultations on signing the agreed draft peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan“, he wrote on his Telegram channel.
On March 13, the Armenian Foreign Ministry announced that Yerevan and Baku have agreed on the text of the peace treaty and have completed the negotiation process. Yerevan explained that it is expecting proposals from Baku regarding the place and date of signing the document.
The main opposition political forces in Armenia called this agreement "capitulation of the Pashinyan regime".
Armenia and Azerbaijan have not yet published an agreed version of the document.
After the parties announced the agreement as a peace treaty, Baku proposed new conditions for signing the document.
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Ayhan Hajizadeh said that the signing of a peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan is possible if a number of key conditions are met, including the cessation of border incidents and amendments to the Armenian constitution that exclude territorial claims to Baku.
Yerevan has repeatedly rejected Baku's accusations of shelling the border and claims that the Armenian constitution does not include territorial claims.
At the same time, Pashinyan said, that his government intends to initiate the adoption of a new constitution, which should have a “regional character“.
