Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has rejected opposition accusations that the republic's authorities have carried out a "coup attempt" by detaining the opposition mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu.
The accusations against the Turkish authorities were made by the leader of the Republican People's Party, Özgür Özel, which the mayor of Istanbul represents.
"Ozgür Özel cannot accuse us of a coup," AKP spokesman Ömer Çelik told reporters. He called on the opposition leader to provide evidence for the accusations he has made. A representative of the party led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said there was no information about the content of the case filed against Imamoglu.
It was previously reported that 87 of the 106 suspects, including Imamoglu, were detained on Wednesday as part of corruption and terrorism support investigations conducted by the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office.
