A teenager without a driver's license hit six people, including a police officer, in Berlin after trying to escape a police check. One of the injured is in critical condition after being crushed by the car, German authorities said.
According to police, the car accelerated, lost control and went onto the sidewalk, where it crashed into pedestrians. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, March 26, when the driver tried to escape a police check by reversing and leaving the road.
60 firefighters, 22 specialized vehicles and a rescue helicopter arrived at the scene. The Berlin fire department has activated a protocol for "mass casualty incident".
Three other teenagers were traveling in the car, all without the necessary registration. All passengers, including the driver, were detained at the scene.
The incident is part of a disturbing series of car attacks in Germany in recent months. Earlier this month, two people died and several were injured in Mannheim after a man drove into a crowd and later killed himself. In another incident in Munich, a suspected Islamist drove a car into almost 40 people.
In December, a car plowed into visitors to a Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing six and injuring about 200.
