There is a possibility that US President Donald Trump will be re-elected for a third term, but this will require amendments to the US Constitution, said the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Mike Johnson.
„I tell everyone, read the constitution, there are constitutional ways. "It would take a constitutional amendment to do that, so that's a pretty high bar," he said in response to a question from an NBC News reporter.
Johnson noted that he and Trump had talked about a third term and that the president understood the constitutional limitations.
According to the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1951, the same person can be elected head of state no more than twice. However, there are two ways to change the U.S. Constitution to give Trump the legal basis to seek re-election for a third term. In the first case, a two-thirds vote in Congress would be needed. In the second case, two-thirds of the states (34 out of 50) could convene a constitutional convention to propose amendments. Both methods require subsequent ratification of the amendments by at least 38 of the 50 states.
