Israel does not rule out the possibility of Iran being deterred from acquiring nuclear weapons through diplomatic means, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said today, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.
He pointed out that there are indications of possible indirect talks between Tehran and Washington.
"We are not holding direct talks with the Iranians, but they have signaled that they are ready for indirect talks with the United States. I would not be surprised if such talks begin soon," Saar said during his visit to Paris. He stressed that Israel and France share the common goal of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Earlier today, Saar met with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, with whom they discussed the growing tensions in the region. Israel's top diplomat stressed that Iran poses a threat not only to Israel but to the entire Middle East.
"In this context, we are actively talking with France, Britain and maintaining an intensified dialogue with the United States," Saar added.
Meanwhile, Barrot warned that the failure of diplomatic efforts to limit Iran's nuclear program would make a military confrontation almost inevitable.
For its part, Tehran categorically denies developing nuclear weapons.
