Turkey wants to negotiate with the United States to remove additional 10 percent tariffs announced by President Donald Trump, Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat said on Monday, quoted by Reuters. He added that the rates for Turkey were "the best of the worst", given the higher tariffs for many other countries, BTA reported.
“We want to discuss the issue in negotiations with the Commerce Department and the US Trade Representative (...), as there is a surplus of $2.4 billion in favor of the United States in trade between the two countries for 2024“, he said in a statement quoted by the agency.
US President Donald Trump announced wide-ranging "reciprocal tariffs" for countries around the world, world agencies reported. The aim of the measure, according to him, is to stimulate domestic American production, but at the same time it poses a risk of price increases and trade wars.
The EU will face a 20 percent tariff on its imports to the US, China - 34 percent, and India - 26 percent. Other tariffs for larger importers and US trading partners include 25 percent for goods from South Korea, 24 percent for those from Japan, and 32 percent for those from Taiwan. Imports from the UK will be taxed at 10 percent.
