Axios: Netanyahu to visit Trump on Monday, urges tougher stance on Tehran - 1

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to visit Washington on Monday to meet with US President Donald Trump, Axios reported, citing sources.

According to the media outlet, the two sides will discuss US tariffs, Iran's nuclear program, and the situation in the Gaza Strip. The trip was originally planned for mid-April.

The portal's sources report that the timing of the visit could still change due to the upcoming court hearings in Israel on a corruption case, in which the Israeli prime minister is expected to participate.

According to Axios, Netanyahu believes that the chances of reaching a nuclear deal between the US and Iran are extremely small and wants to agree with Trump to strike Iran's nuclear facilities if diplomacy fails.

On April 4, Trump said that the Iranian leadership wants to conduct a dialogue with Washington not through intermediaries, but through direct negotiations. On March 7, Trump said he had sent a message to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei offering to negotiate over its nuclear program, but Tehran has refused direct dialogue with the United States.

On March 30, Trump said he would impose additional tariffs on Iran in two weeks if the nuclear talks fail to yield results. He threatened unprecedented bombing of the country if the deal is completely rejected. In response, Khamenei noted that he did not believe in the likelihood of U.S. military intervention, but warned that any attempt by Washington to provoke unrest in Iran would be resolutely repelled.
