NATO chief: Donald Trump's tariffs do not violate NATO treaty - 1

The extensive new US tariffs announced by President Donald Trump do not violate NATO treaties. This was stated by the Alliance's Secretary General Mark Rutte after a meeting with the foreign ministers of the member states in Brussels.

His words were in response to a question from a reporter who referred to Article 2 of the NATO treaty, which states: "NATO Allies shall strive to eliminate conflict in their international economic policies and shall promote economic cooperation among some or all of them".

Yesterday, Trump announced global reciprocal tariffs during an event at the White House.

He also showed a table with the new rates imposed in most countries. They range from 10% to 49%. A higher rate is imposed on those countries that are considered "bad" partners.

For example, for the European Union, tariffs are 20%, for China - 34%; Great Britain - 10%; for Ukraine - 10%. Key partners such as India have a 26% added rate, South Korea - 25%, and Japan - 24%.
