The lawyer of the head of the Gagauz autonomy of Moldova, Eugenia Gutsul Natalia Bayram, is confident that Moldovan prosecutors will request an extension of her pre-trial detention, which expires on April 14.
“Based on the behavior of the prosecutors, we assume that the prosecutors will really use all means to ensure that Eugenia Gutsul continues to be held in absolute illegal detention“, the lawyer said.
According to the country's constitution, she specified, the term of preventive detention cannot exceed 12 months.
Gutsul's lawyers will file a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights for human rights violations and persecution of the opposition, added Bayram.
"Moldova has been repeatedly condemned for groundless arrests and violation of Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights. We will prove that the case of Evgenia Gutsul, firstly, is a political order, and secondly, gross violations of human rights were committed by the prosecutor's office and law enforcement agencies," she said.
According to her, law enforcement officers have committed abuses and complaints will be filed against these officers.
