The President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, stressed after a meeting with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Amina Mohamed that the country remains firmly committed to effective multilateralism, with the UN at its core, MIA reports, BTA reports.
“As someone who has dedicated his life to law and justice, I still believe in the need for effective multilateralism and a strong, reformed UN“, said Siljanovska-Davkova. “Real reforms are needed that will make the General Assembly and the UN Security Council more legitimate and more democratic institutions in the implementation of the UN Charter. The Security Council cannot continue to function as it did in 1945. It must be reformed to take on greater responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. The General Assembly must go beyond its role as a forum for debate and become the main body in the decision-making and policy-making process. The judgments of the International Court of Justice must become binding on all countries,” she added.
Silyanovska-Davkova stressed that the world has undergone profound geopolitical, economic, environmental, demographic and technological transformations, while the structure and procedures of the UN remain unchanged. However, she expressed the view that UN representatives should be carriers of the global conscience and play a role in providing peace and hope in difficult times.
UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed agreed that reforms in the UN are necessary for the organization to cope with the challenges of the modern world.
“We need to build respected and inspiring leadership, combining realism and strength with idealism, justice, ethics and morality“, Mohammed said.
She added that the UN must uphold its values and principles to prove to its members that membership in the organization is beneficial. Mohammed stressed the importance of the UN supporting the Republic of North Macedonia in its European integration process, noting that the country is small and unfairly faces long waits to join the European Union.
