The US administration will not stop its new reciprocal import tariffs, President Donald Trump said.
"There are many, many countries that will make deals with us and they will be fair deals, and in some cases they will pay significant tariffs," Trump said.
He acknowledged that trade talks would take place at the tariffs already in place. “There could be permanent tariffs, there could be negotiations. We need open borders for trade,” the head of state added.
Trump confirmed his intention to impose additional tariffs of 50% on imports from China if Beijing does not cancel its own retaliatory tariffs of 34% by noon on April 8 (18:00 Bulgarian time on Tuesday).
On April 2, Trump announced the introduction of tariffs on goods from 185 countries and territories. The universal tariffs of 10% came into effect on April 5, individual tariffs will come into effect on April 9. In addition, the US administration introduced a 25% tariff on all imported cars from April 3.
