The Arabic-language news channel "Alhurra", established and funded by the US after the Iraq invasion, announced that it would lay off most of its staff and stop broadcasting due to the termination of US subsidies that support its operations, BTA reported.

As part of its policy of drastically cutting the federal budget, the administration of US President Donald Trump decided in March to end all government funding for media outlets.

In a notice to employees of "Alhurra" for their release, the head of the television station Jeffrey Gedmin said that he does not believe that the funding of the media outlet will be renewed soon with funds that were approved by the US Congress, the AP reports.

He accuses the Trump administration and Elon Musk of "irresponsibly and illegally" having stopped the funding.

According to Gedmin, the head of the agency responsible for overseeing public media, Carrie Lake, refuses to discuss the freeze of subsidies.

"I believe that she is deliberately depriving us of the money we need to pay you," he explains in a letter to his employees.

However, the media outlet will try to continue to maintain its website.

According to "Alhurra" its weekly audience reaches 30 million people in 22 countries.
