Riots have erupted in the heart of Athens, causing chaos in the popular British tourist district of "Exarchia". Petrol bombs, fireworks and stones were thrown at a local police station late last night, News.bg reports.
"Exarchia" - the rough heart of Athens, known for its rebellious streak, was engulfed in flames after chaos engulfed its narrow streets.
A group of masked rioters launched a surprise attack on the local police station, and riot police responded with tear gas. By sunrise, more than 70 arrests had been made and cars were set on fire.
The riots are believed to have been sparked by a late-night concert in the park, and are likely a form of protest with deeper political roots.
The violence erupted shortly after midnight when a group of about 50 people broke away from a nearby music event and began throwing rocks and bombs at the police station.
What began as a targeted attack quickly escalated into full-scale riots that spread to surrounding streets.
