German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned today's Russian missile strike on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, which killed at least 32 people, calling it a “barbaric attack“, DPA reported, BTA reports.
“The footage from the center of the city of Sumy, where Russian missiles killed innocent civilians on Palm Sunday, is horrifying. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and the wounded“, Scholz said in a statement posted on the social network “Ex“.
He added that such attacks highlight the lack of sincerity behind the stated desire of Russia to seek peace with Ukraine.
“Instead, we see Russia continuing its aggressive war against Ukraine with unbridled brutality“, the chancellor wrote.““This war must end and Russia must finally agree to a complete ceasefire. We are working to achieve this goal together with our European and international partners“, Scholz stressed.“
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at least 32 people were killed in the strike, including two children. At least 84 others were wounded, including eight children, Ukrainian police said.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibikha said the attack constituted a “war crime“ and accused Russia of delaying accepting the US-proposed complete ceasefire in March.
