China has imposed visa restrictions on several US officials for “inappropriate behavior“ on Tibet-related issues, Reuters reported, citing the Chinese Foreign Ministry, News.bg reports.
The measure comes in response to new visa restrictions that Washington introduced two weeks ago against Chinese officials involved in policies restricting access to Tibetan areas by foreigners. The United States has accused the Chinese Communist Party of deliberately blocking access to Tibet for American diplomats, journalists and international observers, insisting on “unrestricted access.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Tibet is China’s internal matter and the US actions constitute a serious violation of international law and established norms in international relations.
According to Chinese authorities, foreign tourists can visit Tibet as long as they travel in groups and obtain prior permission. However, diplomats and foreign journalists need special approval from local authorities.
“Tibet is open. China welcomes friendly foreigners to visit, travel and do business in the region,” Lin said. He added that Beijing opposes any external interference under the pretext of protecting human rights, religion or culture.
China took control of Tibet in 1950. Since then, international human rights organizations and Tibetan exiles have regularly criticized Beijing's rule as oppressive.
