Around 25,000 people living in the Turkish city of Lice in the Diyarbakir province got "high" unintentionally as a result of a planned burning of over 20 tons of confiscated cannabis, reported “Türkiye Today“, BTA reported.
On April 18, Turkish authorities conducted an operation to burn over 20 tons of confiscated cannabis near the city of Lice, as a result of which thick smoke rose over the city, causing dizziness, hallucinations and symptoms of intoxication among residents.
“We cannot open the windows of our homes because of the terrible smell. Our children got sick and we constantly go to hospital“, a resident of Lice told “Türkiye Today“.
The destroyed cannabis was seized in over 200 operations carried out by the Turkish police in 2024, with a total value of over 10 billion Turkish liras ($261 million), the publication said.
