Recent announcements out of Japan have caused excitement among car enthusiasts with the potential revival of a beloved Mzone classic, the Toyota Starlet. According to inside sources, Toyota is exploring the idea of reintroducing the Starlet model under its Gazoo Racing (GR) division.
The GR Starlet is said to deviate slightly from its predecessors in terms of dimensions, with its length increasing modestly by around 170mm. . Reports suggest that Toyota engineers are aiming for a low weight of just 980kg.
A turbocharged three-cylinder engine is expected to run under the hood, likely derived from Toyota's existing 1.6-liter unit, but possibly downsized to 1.3-liters for optimal nimbleness and responsiveness. Despite its compact size, this unit is expected to develop around 150 hp. Transmission options are said to include both a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, catering to a variety of driver preferences.
Although the GR Starlet will sport the Gazoo Racing badge shared by its siblings such as the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, it is notable for ditching the advanced all-wheel drive system found in those models. Instead, power will be directed solely to the front wheels, prioritizing agile handling and precise control in rally conditions.
