In the first month of 2025, more than 6.7 million passenger cars were sold in the world. These data are from the consulting company GlobalData. According to its statistics, in January the global car market grew by 1.9% compared to the same month in 2024 to 6,782,098 cars. The largest number of passenger cars is purchased in China, although the local market recorded a slight decline compared to January last year. In second place in car sales is the United States, and in third - Europe.
At the beginning of the year, the Chinese purchased 1,963,464 cars, which is 1.4 percent less than the figure for January 2024. New car sales in the United States in January totaled 1,108,924 units, up 4.5 percent from a year earlier. European markets saw a total of 1,008,694 cars sold, down 3.2 percent from January 2024. Meanwhile, car sales in Eastern Europe fell 2.9 percent year-to-date to 288,524 units.
In South America, 225,619 new cars were sold in the month, up 22.3 percent from January 2024. Other major global automotive markets include Japan (372,441 units; +11.9 percent), Canada (111,838 units; +0.2 percent) and South Korea (104,042 units; -9.3 percent).
If we talk about the figures for 2024, then we must say that then a total of about 88.6 million new cars were sold worldwide. This is 2.1 percent more than the result in 2023. More than 25 million were sold in China, almost 16 million in the US and more than 13 million in Europe.
We will recall that Toyota retained its title of world leader in terms of sales volumes last year, selling 10.8 million cars worldwide together with its subsidiaries. This is not a record: compared to 2023, sales decreased by 3.7%, which is due, among other things, to a sharp decline in demand at home. Volkswagen Group is in second place, and Hyundai is in third.
