For the first time in the last six years, an outbreak of plague in small ruminants was discovered by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency in Velingrad. The disease has been detected in five related livestock facilities with nearly 1,800 sheep.

The owners concealed the infection for over half a month. During this time the animals were treated by registered veterinarians without notifying the competent authorities. The prosecutor's office has already been notified of the case.
Defined a seven-kilometer safety zone around the outbreak in Velingrad and a ten-kilometer monitored zone, which includes the Velingrad villages of Alendarova, Dolna Dabeva, Sveta Petka and Grashevo, Rakitovo, Kostandovo and Dorkovo.
Infected and contact animals are killed and disposed of. The movement of small ruminants in the entire area is restricted.
The disease is not dangerous for humans, but when it spreads it causes significant economic damage.
The last registered case of plague in small ruminants dates back to the summer of 2018 in the Yambol village of Bolyarovo.
