The minister warned that in the absence of payments, the gas operator may suspend Balkan Stream transit. However, as of now, all due payments have been made and the services are protected from the sanctions regime until 20 December 2024. After this date "Gazprom" must provide an alternative payment mechanism.
Minister Malinov also commented on the legislative proposals to postpone the liberalization of the electricity market for household consumers. Although the budget foresees nearly 400 mln. BGN to prepare the liberalization, the final decision will depend on the parliament.
The planned market release remains scheduled for January 1, 2026.
At the Powers Summit 2024, Malinov emphasized that Bulgaria will continue to play a strategic role in energy projects, including the development of
"Green Corridor" for the transfer of renewable energy from Azerbaijan to Europe. He noted the importance of defining energy poverty groups and called for a social policy that is not based on energy.
The green energy submarine cable project between Azerbaijan and Europe is key for the region, and Bulgaria insists on active participation in its implementation.
