It is better for the reactors from the “Belene“ NPP to be sold to Ukraine and for money to go into the budget, instead of sitting under sheds. This was announced to journalists in parliament by GERB leader Boyko Borisov.
The statement is in connection with the law adopted yesterday by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which allows the state nuclear energy operator to purchase two Soviet-designed nuclear reactors from Bulgaria for the Ukrainian “Khmelnytsky“ power plant.
The Bulgarian National Assembly approved in the summer of 2023 the sale of the reactors to Ukraine.
However, resistance is expected from the BSP party, which currently governs together with GERB. In 2023, the Socialists and “Vazrazhdane“ voted “against“ the deal with Ukraine.
“Just as we tolerate Borislav Gutsanov meeting with Eleonora Mitrofanova, taking into account the complexity of the coalition and their ideological attachment to Russia, so too will they tolerate what we have undertaken as our Ukrainian and Euro-Atlantic partners. This is the price of compromise“, commented the GERB leader.
According to him, selling the reactors at the price at which Ukraine will buy them is certainly more profitable than having them sit unused, given the fact that there is no European regulation that would currently allow Russian reactors to be built.
