The cabinet of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov is constantly postponing the resolution of key issues for the country.
This was told to FOCUS by the director of "Myara" Parvan Simeonov.
According to him, the government is waiting for the development of political processes, while at the same time striving to avoid problems with different forces in parliament. "I assess the government's work as a constant postponement. In order to start working in reality, it will probably wait for the BSP congress, then it will monitor whether the budget will be passed and postpone the euro. It looks like a very careful testing of the ground." Simeonov said.
According to him, a key problem facing the government remains Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone. He believes that it will be a challenge for the cabinet to meet all the criteria and he is not sure whether the society is ready for this step.
"I have the feeling that Bulgaria is not completely ready for the euro and the competent institutions in the West understand this. The government will probably start to postpone the topic, but at the same time it must maintain the perspective of membership. And President Radev is encouraging the government towards the euro, although the government is not very sure," explained the sociologist.
He warned that if Boyko Borisov supports the accelerated adoption of the euro, this will provide an ideal breeding ground for "Vazrazhdane". "Thus, the government is in a slight trap, on the one hand, the corrective Radev and the opposition PP-DB to keep in mind why not, and on the other hand, the radical opposition in the person of Kostadinov to keep in mind why yes. In this situation, here is an ongoing challenge that will have to be resolved in the coming weeks and months. Against this background, this whole story with the presidency serves only to distract attention“, he added.
Another important factor, according to Simeonov, is the role of Boyko Borisov, who, although he does not hold a direct managerial position, remains the key political figure. "If the Prime Minister is Rosen Zhelyazkov, then Borisov is the person who is constantly talking and has been more active for a long time. Borisov is in a phase of active political appetite and is probably considering all kinds of options. The option with the presidency is too far away. Borisov holds the political ones - both wings of the MRF and both wings of the BSP", Simeonov analyzed.
He gave an example of the vote for the "Peevski" commission, which, according to him, clearly showed Borisov's influence. According to him, the deputies from the ruling majority voted "very reluctantly" against Peevski, which shows that he retains strong positions in the government.
"Borisov likes to balance, likes to choose, likes to give chances or take away chances, and in this way to divide and rule," Simeonov emphasized. He noted that GERB has an "alternative majority" and can count on support from PP-DB for adopting the euro.
"If GERB does not find the strength for the euro, PP-DB offered to support it. Here we have another position for balance. So Borisov is in a comfortable political role, there is nothing to be deceived about," he added.
Simeonov also commented on the overall political situation in the country, defining it as "a classic division between status quo and change on the one hand, and a classic division between nationalists and ethnic parties on the other".
According to him, although the political situation may seem complicated, it is actually well-known and does not come as a surprise. "No matter how complicated the picture may seem, when we look at it from a bird's eye view, it is the old Bulgarian simple picture. If we put on rose-colored glasses, we may even decide that everything is in place," Simeonov concluded.
