The case, cited earlier today in a post on social networks by a non-governmental organization, is known to the Ministry of Interior. An investigation was conducted by the "Internal Security" and "Inspectorate" directorates in the ministry.
This is stated in a press release from the Ministry of Interior, regarding the information provided by BOEC that senior police chiefs tried to thwart an operation by their subordinate police officers to capture cigarette smugglers. However, the rank-and-file officers refused to comply with their orders to withdraw and captured the illegal goods worth 8 million leva. However, instead of praise, they were given "disciplinary punishments". The BOEC also points to the personal participation of the current Deputy Director of the Directorate of the Border Police - Senior Commissioner Kalin Litov as the person who called the smuggler directly during the operation to warn him and centrally issued the order to withdraw the police officers.

"The results of the inspection are objectified in a report, which, given the information contained in it, is classified. Based on the findings, data on unlawful actions of police officers and the proposals made in the report, by order of the Minister of the Interior Daniel Mitov from January 2025, the materials were sent to the Director of the Directorate of the Border Police as a disciplinary sanctioning body, by which 10 disciplinary proceedings were initiated.
The Prosecutor's Office was immediately notified with a view to establishing unlawful actions of police officers. Would releasing more information and public speculation hinder the investigation and the uncovering of the objective truth?
