The use of cameras to establish average speed on first-class and second-class roads will be the second stage of the reform to limit speeding on the road, Minister of Regional Development Grozdan Karadjov told the media in parliament. He took part in a meeting of the Transport Committee, at which six bills related to road safety were adopted in first reading.

He pointed out that the average speed is planned to be measured by cameras initially only on highways. The distance from one frame with a camera on the road to another frame, detected by the cameras, divided by the time for which the distance was covered and if the average speed exceeds the permissible one, then in some part of the road the car was moving at a higher speed, the minister explained the methodology.

Minister Karadjov also said that it is very difficult to certify the cameras so that they can measure speed and to do this, each of the cameras goes through a calibration regime every six months.

He commented that the draft law of the Ministry of Interior generally provides for tightening discipline and compliance with road traffic rules. One of the specific proposals is to reduce the speed on highways to 130 km/h.
