Europe's largest airport powered entirely by solar energy will be located just a few hundred kilometers from Bulgaria - 1

Istanbul Airport will cover all its needs from electrical energy from a solar plant. It will be put into operation by the end of the current year, the operator of Europe's largest airport announced – IGA. The investment is worth EUR 212 million.

The plant will be located on an area of 3 million square meters in the province of Ecĸishexip. 439,000 solar panels with a total capacity of 199.32 megawatts (MW) will be installed on the area in question.

The photovoltaic power plant produces 340 million kilowatt hours of energy annually. Thus, Istanbul Airport will become the first airport in the world, which will serve all its needs through solar electricity.

Istanbul's new airport is to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through the operation of the airport in the province of Ecĸishexip. "This is how we will prevent emissions of greenhouse gases, amounting to 105,996 tons of carbon dioxide,", he noted.

Istanbul Airport was opened in October 2018. It started operating at full capacity in April 2019 and since then it has been among the key aviation hubs in Europe, along with Frankfurt Airport. and “Heathrow”. Its annual capacity is 90 million passengers. Its maximum capacity is 200 million passengers, but it will be reached in 2028. For 2023, Istanbul Airport was the busiest airport in Europe with an average of 1,375 passengers per day.
