The "Indira Gandhi International Airport" in Delhi (IGIA) has become the first in India to achieve zero carbon airport status, airport operator Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has announced.

„Initially, IGIA planned to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2030 and this goal was achieved much earlier than planned thanks to the introduction of renewable energy sources, the development of environmental infrastructure and the use of electric vehicles” , the operator said in a press release.

As part of the fight for environmental safety, the airport is exploring the possibility of introducing environmentally friendly aviation fuel, notes DIAL.

Zero Carbon Airport status is awarded by the industry's International Airports Council (ACI).

Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is the largest in northern India and the country's busiest airport in terms of takeoffs and landings. In 2023, IGIA's passenger traffic reached 65 million people.
