Alek Popov was posthumously awarded the grand prize "Hristo G. Danov"  - 1

Alek Popov is this year's winner of the grand prize “Hristo G. Danov” for overall contribution to the national literary culture.

The Minister of Culture Nayden Todorov presented the award posthumously to his daughter Alexandra Popova. They were handed out at the solemn ceremony in the yard of the house museum “Hristo G. Danov” in the Old Town of Plovdiv.

University Publishing House “Saint Kliment Ohridski“ received the award in the category “Bulgarian publishing”.

About "Author of Bulgarian fiction" Alexander Sekulov won the award for the novel “The Mermaid Ship” (publishing house “Hermes“).

About "Fiction Translator" the award went to Stoyan Gyaurov for the translation of “Vertigo. Feelings“ by V. G. Sebald (publishing house “ Hummingbird“).

In the category "Author in the field of humanitarian studies" the prize went to Tony Nikolov for the book "There is such a country". Notes on the Bulgarian crises” (publishing house “Hermes“).

Anita Tarasevich was awarded the “Hristo G. Danov” for the book “Green Frogs“ (publishing house “Trud“), as "Author of an edition for children“.

About "Book Artist" the award went to Kiril Zlatkov for “Thief of Solitude“ with author Raimondo Varsano (“Knigomania“ publishing house). Sofia International Literary Festival was awarded in the category "Presentation of a Bulgarian book" and for "Library work" the award was presented to the Regional Library “Professor Boyan Penev” – city of Razgrad.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Plovdiv, which are co-founders of the award for contribution to Bulgarian literary culture. The competition has been held annually since 1999.

Nominated participants traditionally receive their awards on the occasion of May 24 - the Day of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture, and of Slavic literature. The awards are determined on a competitive basis in two rounds. The laureates are awarded a diploma, a small sculpture and a cash prize, and the nominees – diploma.

Winner of the Grand Prize for overall contribution to national literary culture in 2023 was writer Georgi Gospodinov, who together with translator Angela Rodel won the International “Booker” prize.
