Maria Bakalova is preparing a play for Broadway. The actress said this at a meeting with fans during the festival for anime, comics and pop culture Aniventure Comic Con (July 6-7, Sofia).
„I will always miss the theater, although I don't know what I love more – the cinema or the theatre. People have said it: One is bread, the other is water. One cannot do without the other, but you just focus on the things that are more ready and on the agenda”, she said.
„Of course I would go on stage one day. There is a play that we are currently working on with a colleague of mine, with whom we have already filmed it. And it should, at some point, go to Broadway, to New York”, the actress announced.
ON DREAMS AND DREAM PARTNERSHIPS IN CINEMA
„A lot of people say that to be in this industry you have to have a thick skin. I'm not sure that I'm one of those people, because I cry, I suffer, and I'm sad. Sometimes I get angry about something I wanted and it doesn't work out. The important thing is to believe that maybe the problem isn't in you, you just weren't the right person for the given role”, says Maria Bakalova.
Her dream is to one day have the opportunity to work with the same people she has already worked with: “Over and over again, not just once. I like to create friendly, chosen families and relationships“.
„I think everyone should dare and that is the only advice I would give. "I don't know if I'm a coward myself, but I have such suspicions," she added.
LARS VON TRIER, MADS MIKELSEN, CATE BLANCHET
„There are so many actors and directors I want to work with. One of my big, deep and sacred dreams will remain to have the opportunity to one day work with one of the two or, God willing, both of the greats who made me fall in love with cinema – Lars von Trier and Thomas Vintenberg”, says Maria Bakalova.
As an actress, she dreams of working with Cate Blanchett: “I had the opportunity to meet her recently and spend quite a bit of time. We were together almost the whole day. I think she is a benchmark for a film artist. I would also like to work with Anthony Hopkins“.
If I have to name one actor, it's Mads Mikkelsen, one director – Lars von Trier, and an actress – Cate Blanchett, summarizes Maria Bakalova.
ABOUT THE NEW BULGARIAN FILM WITH HER PARTICIPATION
Maria Bakalova also talked about the new Bulgarian film “Triumph” starring her, which is due to hit the big screen soon: “The film explores a story inspired by reality in the 1990s. We are currently in post-production and soon the film should go to festivals”.
„The film is interesting because it is a social satire inspired by real life, which is even more absurd and dramatic. The line between tragedy and comedy is very thin and slippery, and “Triumph” it's exactly that. I can't wait for people to see what we've created because we put a lot of love into it and it was a wonderful experience," adds the actress.
MY PROFESSION GOT WILD
I think that there is a dark side in every industry, not only in entertainment, believes Maria Bakalova.
„Perhaps, what my profession has taken from me is the wild, primal, thoughtless things I have done at other times. Whereas now my job requires a bit more responsibility. The more people know about it, the more people I hope will be inspired by what I've created. And you want to be a good example, says the actress.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BULGARIAN AND AMERICAN CINEMA
In her words, the difference between Bulgarian and American cinema is a difference between low-budget and high-budget cinema, as well as in the number of shooting days and hours of work. “You have a little more time outside because the budgets are bigger,”, she explains.
If you have a good team of people, the work is the same, believes Maria Bakalova.
She adds that this year she only shot in Canada – one film in Montreal and one in Toronto. She is now filming in Ireland.
FOR THE FAME
„I have a very big problem with this word – known. It gives me an internal panic attack, says the star of Borat 2.
„I am one of those people who dare to do something according to their intuition. Now I'm trying to parry that and use my ratio, which is very difficult for me. Because I don't think we get more righteous as we grow older. So now I have to think more, take more responsibility for my actions, which is not bad, but it makes me work on my patience. This is the thing that has changed”, says Maria Bakalova.
