The sci-fi horror "The Alien: Romulus" topped the box office ranking of North America, world agencies report, novini.bg reported.
The film, directed by Uruguayan Fede Alvarez, grossed $41.5 million in its debut weekend in US and Canadian theaters. Its earnings from international markets totaled $66.7 million.
The action of "Alien: Romulus" takes place between the first two films in the series - the iconic "Alien" (1979) by Ridley Scott and "The Aliens" (1986) by James Cameron. The main role is played by actress Kaylee Spaney.
"The Alien: Romulus" is the ninth film in the "Alien" universe, which began 45 years ago with Scott's horror of the same name. Analysts described its debut at the North American box office as "excellent".
After three weeks at the top, the movie "Deadpool & The Werewolf" from the Marvel Cinematic Universe starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman slipped to second place with a weekend gross of $29 million.
At the international box office, the Sean Levy-directed production crossed the iconic $1 billion mark last week.
After its excellent debut last week, when it took second place, the romantic drama "Never Again" based on the Colleen Hoover novel starring Blake Lively is in third place this week with weekend earnings of $24 million.
The fourth and fifth places in the North American box office ranking are occupied by "Twisters" and the remastered 15th anniversary animation Coraline and the Mirror's Secret. Ticket sales for the two films over the weekend in US and Canadian theaters totaled $9.8 million and $8.4 million, respectively.
According to analysts, the successful performance at the box office of sequels such as "Alien: Romulus", "Deadpool & The Werewolf" and "Twisters" testifies to the "undeniable rise of the film industry".
