Orphaned as a child in Sierra Leone, she was adopted in the US.

Mikaela DePrince became the youngest prima ballerina at the Theater of Harlem, New York. She danced with the national ballet troupe of the Netherlands, and in the period before her death she was part of the Boston Ballet. She was also a dedicated humanitarian, advocating for children affected by conflict and violence. He also serves as an ambassador for War Child Holland.
DePrince's life became the subject of a 2012 documentary, and in 2018 Madonna announced plans to film a feature film about the ballerina's career. Mikaela DePrince herself published an autobiography in 2014.
