On this day, the church honors St. Luke of Greece. He was born in the Greek village of Kastoria as the third of seven children in a family of peasant immigrants from the Aegean islands. From an early age, he loved silence, solitude and was distinguished by modesty. He took monastic tonsure and founded a small monastery dedicated to St. Great Martyr Barbara near Corinth. Because of his pure and devoted life, he received the gift of insight. He presented himself to the Lord at about the age of 56. He is one of the first saints about whom it is said that during his prayers he rose above the ground. The life of St. Luke was written in detail by unknown monks after his death. One of the most famous and beloved Byzantine monasteries, Osios Loukas in Stiriot, is dedicated to him. His memory is celebrated on February 7 (February 20, old style).
