On this date, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Martyr Avramii Bulgarian. In addition, the church honors the memory of Rev. Maria of Egypt, writes BLITZ.
Martyr Avramii was born in Volga Bulgaria and was raised in the Muslim faith. By God's will, Avramii became convinced of the falsehood of the Muslim teaching. He became a true Christian and, professing the Christian faith, he became hated by his compatriots. Saint Avramii died a martyr's death on April 1, 1229.
Today is considered the Day of Humor and Joke. However, April 1 is known all over the world for the fact that today it is not a sin to lie, but without exaggerating (or breaking the laws). Some claim that this holiday originated in ancient Rome, where in mid-February (and not in early April) they celebrated the Feast of Fools.
According to another version, we owe the celebration to the joke of the Neapolitan King Monterey. The story goes like this:
The king was presented with a fish on the occasion of the cessation of the earthquake. A year later, the ruler asked for exactly the same fish. However, they could not find such a fish and the chef prepared another one that was very similar to the previous one.
And although the ruler sensed the substitution, he did not get angry, but even cheered up.
Since then, jokes and lies on April 1st have become common.
Another story tells that the holiday of humor was born in England in 1860. English gentlemen were invited to a solemn ceremony of the “bathing of the white lions”, which was to be held on April 1. The English did not suspect the strange ceremony and took their wives to the indicated place. This joke was talked about for a long time afterwards, and 40 years later April 1 was called April Fools' Day.
In France, this custom is called "April fish". Its origin is associated with the time of Charles IX, who in 1564 issued a decree to move the beginning of the year from April 1 to January 1, introducing the Gregorian calendar. The following year, many of his subjects sent their friends New Year's greetings and gifts in April - as a sign of protest or remaining true to tradition. The Sun was then in the constellation Pisces and the French believed that the name "April fish" is quite worthy of such jokes. The tradition is still alive.
In other countries, this day is called "April Fools Day". In New Zealand, Great Britain, Australia and South Africa, jokes are made only until noon. Anyone who jokes at any other time of the day receives the nickname "April Fool".
Today is a name day celebrated by everyone named Abraham or Abram.
In Hebrew, Abram means father of many. The energy that the name carries is of stubbornness and sensitivity.
Who has a name day today, April 1, 2025. Congratulations!
