Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Thursday that Tehran had informed the US of the weekend attack on Israel, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported.
"We informed America when the decision was made about the necessary response to the Israeli regime within the framework of international law and legitimate defense," Amir-Abdolakhian told the state news agency IRNA.
Iran unleashed a massive drone and missile attack on Israel on Saturday, which Tehran said was in response to an April 1 attack on its consulate in Syria that killed at least 13 people, including seven senior military advisers .
"We sent a message to the United States telling them about the operation, and another message early Sunday morning that we do not expect any further tension in the region," Amir-Abolakhian said.
According to him, Tehran has clearly signaled to Washington that American bases and interests in the region will not be attacked "unless Washington wages a war in support of the Israeli regime".
The foreign minister said Tehran's messages, relayed to the U.S. through the Swiss embassy, which represents U.S. interests in Iran, and official diplomatic channels were intended to "create a proper understanding of Iran's actions and prevent escalation of the tension and crisis in the region".
