Russian forces continue to attack Volchansk as part of their offensive north of Kharkiv , which began on May 10, 2024. The two sides are vying for control of the city as Ukrainian forces repulse much of the Russian offensive, Britain's Ministry of Defense said in its daily briefing on the war in Ukraine.
Since the village of Bukhruvatka, southwest of Volchansk, is under Russian control, Moscow's forces are trying to gain physical control of a nearby bridge over the Siverskyi Donets River, threatening the flank and rear of Ukrainian forces in Volchansk.
On the Lukyantsi axis, Russian forces continue to attack in the direction of the village of Liptsi, but have not made significant progress, according to the Ukrainian General Staff.

On May 17, 2024, Vladimir Putin announced that Russian forces were establishing a buffer zone in the Kharkiv region. The front north of Kharkiv has probably stabilized as Russian territorial control is fragmented and disjointed. Russian progress on the axis will be limited in the coming weeks as Moscow's initial momentum has been halted by Ukrainian resistance.
