At a press conference in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, where he is visiting, Blinken said that while Israel had succeeded in destroying the capability of “Hamas” to carry out another attack like the one on October 7 last year, the Israeli government must now ask itself whether a further offensive against the group will be sustainable without a post-war plan.
„Otherwise, „Hamas” will remain in power, which is unacceptable. Otherwise, there will be chaos, lawlessness and a vacuum," he said.
Israel's three-week offensive in Rafah sparked a new wave of outrage after an airstrike on Sunday sparked a fire at a tent camp on the outskirts of the city, killing at least 45 people. Israel says it has struck high-ranking agents of “Hamas” on site and did not intend to cause civilian casualties.
Blinken said today that he could not verify whether US-supplied weapons were used by Israel in its latest strike in Rafah, adding that a subsequent investigation would determine what weapons were used and how.
