The White House prosecution of two former staffers for their criticism of US President Donald Trump sets a dangerous precedent. Republicans, including those who worked on the politician's team during his first presidential term, write about this in an open letter.

It notes that the situation shows signs of abuse of power characteristic of authoritarian states.

„Regardless of party affiliation, every American should reject the idea that the president's enormous power can be used for personal vendetta. Such actions are more likely to be expected from a royal despot than from an elected leader of a constitutional republic. This is the path of autocracy, not democracy,” the letter notes.

Trump was called upon to rescind the orders, and his subordinates were urged not to follow regulations that undermine the oath, politicize the activities of the agencies, and violate the foundations of the Constitution.

The call was supported by former congressmen from the US House of Representatives and Senate from the Democratic and Republican parties, heads of conservative and liberal think tanks, including former Trump communications aide Anthony Scaramucci and former lawyer to the head of state Ty Cobb.

Earlier, former US President Joe Biden criticized the new administration for its immigration policy, calling the White House’s actions “destructive.” In less than 100 days, the Trump team has done so much damage that it is "breathtaking," he said.
