Slovenia officially decided to recognize the Palestinian state, Prime Minister Robert Golob announced during a meeting of the government, broadcasts the national television RTV Slo and BTA. This marks a key moment in international relations and Slovenia's position on the Middle East conflict.

The Slovenian government emphasized that the recognition refers to the Palestinian territories defined by the 1967 borders, a distinction recognized by the United Nations. These borders are seen as a starting point for future peace settlement negotiations. Prime Minister Golob emphasized that the decision is not against any nation, including Israel, but rather a gesture aimed at promoting peace in the region.

The process of recognizing Palestine as an independent state will soon be finalized by the Slovenian Parliament. Spain, Norway and Ireland, despite criticism from Israel, have also recognized the Palestinian state. Slovenia will become the tenth member of the European Union to officially recognize Palestine, joining more than 140 countries around the world that have already done so.

The decision was initially made in early May, but was delayed due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Recent escalations, including attacks on Rafah, which have displaced over a million Palestinians, have prompted Slovenia to speed up the recognition process.

Prime Minister Golob expressed his desire for an immediate ceasefire and the release of the hostages.
