China has announced its intention to remove preferential tariffs on a selection of Taiwanese imports affecting 134 products, including key industrial items such as machinery and chemicals, in direct response to Taiwan's alleged discriminatory actions against Chinese goods. The changes should enter into force on June 15, marking a new chapter in the dynamics of trade between the two, BTA reports.
For a long time, China held the title of Taiwan's largest trading partner. However, recent developments have seen the United States take the lead, thanks to a surge in demand for electronic components and advanced technology.
In 2023, China suspended imports of Taiwanese mangoes, citing biosecurity concerns when pests were detected. A similar ban was in place in 2021 on Taiwanese pineapples, also attributed to pest problems but seen by Taipei as politically charged.
