ELAS is introducing enhanced road safety measures throughout the country in connection with the holding of the European Parliament elections on June 9, starting tomorrow, with the aim of creating conditions for smooth and safe traffic on the roads and facilitating the travel of citizens, as well as preventing road accidents.

Specifically, the measures are being phased in from tomorrow, Friday 7 June to Monday 10 June and will be escalated – peak hours – days of mass exit-entry of vehicles from and to major urban centers.

The planning was carried out under the responsibility of the Directorate "Traffic Police" to the General Headquarters of the Greek Police and includes the main guidelines for the development of measures throughout the country's road network, as well as individual interventions based on local problems and the specific prevailing traffic conditions in each region or district.

Among the measures are:

– enhanced traffic control measures in areas where there is a high volume of passenger traffic (airports, ports, harbors, railway stations, etc.),

In this context, the Greek police recommends to citizens:

– Before traveling, perform a technical inspection of their vehicle and inform themselves about the state of the road network and weather conditions.

– To be especially careful when driving and to comply with the rules of the Road Traffic Code.

– To obey the road signs and the instructions of the road officials.

– Do not use cell phones or other distracting devices while driving.

– Do not drink alcohol before driving.

– Protect children in the car by using child seats.

– To wear safety belts, as well as helmets on motorcycles.

– Do not overestimate driving skills and the technical capabilities of cars.

– Respect and protect their passengers and other road users by driving their vehicles responsibly and carefully.
