The first joint production plant of the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall and the Ukrainian state enterprise "Ukroboroprom" started functioning in Ukraine. This was announced by the Minister of Strategic Industry Alexander Kamishin, quoted by the "Kyiv Independent" and News.bg.
The news comes at a time when Kiev aims to develop domestic arms production this year.
Earlier, Rheinmetall announced plans to open at least four production plants in Ukraine.
The facility will allow faster repair of equipment delivered from abroad and its subsequent return to the front line. According to the minister, in the future the plant will also produce new armored vehicles.
The location of the plant was not disclosed, possibly for security reasons.
"The important thing is that this will help not only our armed forces, but also our economy. "Ukrainian specialists will work in the plant under the leadership of German colleagues," Kamishin pointed out.
In October last year, the Ukrainian government announced that Rheinmetall and "Ukroboroprom" will join forces for repair, maintenance and production of armored vehicles in Ukraine. Their joint venture was registered on October 18, 2023.
The first Fuchs armored personnel carriers could be produced in Ukraine by the end of summer this year, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Paperger specified in December.
In addition, the German manufacturer intends to open factories in Ukraine for the production of artillery shells, gunpowder and anti-aircraft weapons.
