The earthquake occurred in the early hours, at exactly 01:36, with its epicenter 45 kilometers southwest of Balıkesir. Balıkesir is a bustling city, home to approximately 238,000 residents. It should be noted that the earthquake occurred relatively close to the surface, at a depth of only 10 kilometers.
