The head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Elon Musk criticized the decision of the Romanian Central Electoral Bureau to reject the candidacy of Calin Georgescu for president.
"This is madness!", Musk wrote on the social network X, commenting on the information about this.
On November 24, 2024, the first round of the presidential elections in Romania was held, in which Georgescu received the most votes. On December 6, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the entire electoral process and ordered new elections. The decision was made after Romanian intelligence services declassified documents showing that Georgescu had illegally financed his election campaign, that there had been hacker attacks on the digital infrastructure used in the election process, and that the Russian Federation had carried out some “hybrid actions” against the republic. The government took note of the Constitutional Court's decision and set new dates for the re-run of the presidential elections for May 4 and 18 this year.
