Volcanic activity on the island of Stromboli, part of the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily, has prompted Italian authorities to raise the alert level from orange to red, reports DPA, quoted by Focus.
The local authorities urged the islanders to follow the instructions of the civil defense.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology indicated that increased volcanic activity has been registered on Stromboli. The island's active volcano is spewing lava and ash into the sea, the institute said.
Several hundred inhabitants live on the island of Stromboli. Many tourists travel to it by sea from the Italian mainland or from Sicily to climb the volcano, which is 920 meters high and erupts regularly.
