Orban "is going today to Georgia (...) without a doubt to show his support for the Georgian government," Borel said in an interview with Spanish public radio. "Whatever Orbán says during his visit, he does not represent the European Union," added the first European diplomat.
Hungary's nationalist prime minister is the only leader of an EU member state who remains close to Moscow. He is one of the few who reacted to the election result in this Caucasian country, with congratulations from the "Georgian Dream" party. for the "crushing victory".
The pro-European Georgian opposition is calling for demonstrations today to condemn the announced results of the parliamentary elections, which it says were "stolen" from the ruling party. President Salome Zurabishvili even stated that it was a "special Russian operation", notes AFP.
"The acting president of the (European) Union has no competences in the field of foreign policy,", Borrell stressed, expressing the growing distrust of Brussels towards the head of the Hungarian government, which presides over the EU during this term.
Borrell is in Barcelona to participate in a meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), which will be dedicated to the situation in the Middle East.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said today that joining the EU remains a "priority" for Tbilisi, despite criticism from Brussels, which accuses the ruling party of "Georgian Dream" in an authoritarian pro-Russian bias, notes AFP.
"Our main foreign policy priority is, of course, European integration," Kobakhidze told journalists, saying he expected relations with Brussels to be resumed after the sharp tension in recent months.
"Everything possible will be done to ensure that Georgia will be fully integrated into the EU by 2030,", the Prime Minister promised.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov today categorically rejected allegations of Russian interference in the elections in the Caucasian country.
