A California court sentenced to life in prison without parole the man who attacked the former Democratic leader's husband with a hammer two years ago in the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, reported France Press.
David Deppey was already sentenced to 30 years in prison in another trial that ended in May. With this new sentence added to the first, the lawsuit in the state of California ends. The sentence was pronounced a week before the end of the extremely tense presidential race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in the United States.
Deppei broke into the Pelosi family's home in San Francisco in October 2022, a few weeks before the US midterm elections. He is said to have strongly believed in conspiracy theories spread online, AFP noted.
Paul Pelosi suffers a fractured skull after being hit with a hammer by an assailant looking for his wife. At the time, Nancy Pelosi was one of the most powerful people in the US as Speaker of the House of Representatives and was a regular target of far-right conspiracy theories.
Deppey admitted to investigators that he planned to "break his knees" to Nancy Pelosi if she doesn't admit the "lies" of the Democrats. Paul Pelosi manages to contact the police, who intervene at the last minute. The attack was caught on a police camera.
Before he was re-sentenced on Tuesday, Depepe read a lengthy statement containing conspiracy claims. He accuses the US government of orchestrating the attacks on September 11, 2001, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. According to the paper, he also spoke out against the "magical murderous rituals of evil" in America.
He has not apologized to the Pelosi family, and his lawyers intend to appeal the sentence.
"Although some politicians downplayed this incident and joked about it to gain political dividends, this was a horrific attack on one of our leaders, a family and our democracy," said San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.
"We must all do our part to protect justice and the rule of law,", she added.
