Berlin: We stopped illegal border crossings - 1

German police report that illegal border crossings into Germany are decreased by 13% in the first three weeks since permanent border checks were introduced, DPA reported, referring to official preliminary data published today, writes BTA.

The reduction was calculated against the number of illegal crossings in the three weeks preceding the introduction of the checks.

Police recorded a total of 3,464 attempts by foreigners to enter Germany without permission through land borders between September 16 and October 6. Of these, 2,073 were turned back at the border.

In the period from August 26 to September 15, 3,984 illegal entries were registered, and a total of 2,353 people were returned.

These data were released after a parliamentary inquiry by a representative of the far-left party "The Left".

Federal police have been checking Germany's borders with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark since September 16.

Random checks on the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland have been carried out since mid-October last year. Such checks have been carried out at the border with Austria since autumn 2015.
