French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed today in a joint statement their concern over the political situation in Georgia, Reuters reported .

At the start of the week, several thousand Georgian demonstrators took to the streets to protest what they say was fraud in last month's parliamentary election, which saw the ruling Georgian Dream party, which is seen as increasingly pro-Russian, win .

Macron, Scholz and Tusk - who made a joint statement as members of the so-called Weimar Triangle - said they could not support the opening of talks on Georgian membership in the European Union if the country did not carry out reforms.

"Unless Georgia reverses its current course of action and demonstrates tangible reform efforts, in particular by repealing recently passed laws that contradict European values and principles, we will not be able to support the opening of accession negotiations with Georgia," they said.

The statement by the three leaders was released as nearly 50 European leaders gathered in Budapest today and tomorrow to discuss support for Ukraine, migration, economic security and the EU's declining competitiveness.
