These people belong to the middle class. 10 percent of Germans earn more than €8,736 a month before tax. In the total amount of income taxes paid to the budget, their share amounts to as much as 57%. And the group of the richest includes people who earn 23,656 euros or more per month before taxes.

How much do the president, chancellor and military earn

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier receives a monthly salary of 23,003 euros. The last time the president's salary was increased on March 1 this year - by 6.37%, which is equal to 1,378 euros, according to the German publication "Focus".

The chancellor received a similar increase - today his salary amounts to 22,083 euros per month before taxes. However, this is not all - in reality, the chancellor earns much more. For example, the total income of the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, together with all allowances and additional payments, amounts to 32,788 euros per month.

In 2024, the salaries of all civil servants, including the military, were significantly increased at the same time as those of the president and chancellor. According to the publicly available tariff table, a major general of the Bundeswehr receives 11,947 euros per month, and a lieutenant general - 13,294 euros.

It is also important to note that civil servants in Germany, unlike ordinary employees, are exempt from pension contributions and do not pay unemployment insurance. However, they pay income tax on a general basis.

How much do judges, mayors and deputies earn

Each German state has its own tariffs, which differ from those at the federal level. Among the highest salaries are those of mayors of large cities with over 500,000 inhabitants. In Munich, for example, the mayor's salary amounts to 14,785 euros per month. Only the mayors of Berlin and Hamburg receive more, as these two cities also have the status of federal states.

Presidents of the federal courts in Germany receive a salary of 16,084 euros. The judges of the Federal Constitutional Court receive the same amount.

In July of this year, the remunerations of the deputies in the German Bundestag were also increased. According to the data from the website of the parliament, the deputies currently receive 11,227 euros per month. In addition, MPs in Germany are also entitled to additional income - for example, from legal work, as they can exercise their old profession in parallel.
