Russian President Vladimir Putin should not bomb civilian areas in Ukraine, said US President Donald Trump, adding that otherwise he may impose additional sanctions against Moscow, BTA reported.

"Over the past few days, there has been no reason for Putin to fire missiles at civilian areas, cities and towns. This makes me think that maybe he doesn't want to stop the war," Trump wrote on the social network "Truth Social".

"Maybe he's just playing me and should be approached differently - through "bank" or "secondary sanctions"? Too many people are dying," Trump added in his post.

The comment came as Washington is pressuring Ukraine to accept a ceasefire agreement that would include major territorial concessions in favor of Moscow, DPA noted. At the same time, Russia continues to bomb Ukraine despite Russian officials' claims that they want peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier today that his meeting with his American counterpart Donald Trump at the Vatican today could be historic if the peaceful end to the war between Ukraine and Russia that they have been discussing is achieved, Reuters reported.

"Good meeting. We were able to discuss a lot of things in private. We hope for a result of all the things that were discussed," Zelensky wrote in a post on "Telegram".

According to him, these topics included "protecting the lives of our people. A complete and unconditional ceasefire. A reliable and lasting peace that will prevent the re-emergence of war."

"This was a very symbolic meeting that has the potential to become historic if we achieve joint results. Thank you, President Donald Trump!", Zelensky added.
