The powerful storm, moved through northern California, bringing record amounts of rain and snow, killing two people and causing significant flooding, reports BTA.

Hundreds of thousands of residents in the region were left without electricity, and forecasters warn that the risk of flash floods and rock slides will continue.

Dozens of flights were canceled at San Francisco airport, with about 550 flights affected by delays.

Power problems

In neighboring Washington state, nearly 223,000 people, mainly in the Seattle area, were without power. Local authorities said the power outages, which began on Tuesday, were likely to continue into Saturday. Utility crews are working to remove downed power poles, branches and other obstructions to restore power.

To provide assistance, local authorities have opened heated centers that offer free internet and mobile device charging facilities. Some hospitals and medical facilities had to close due to the lack of electricity.

Ski resorts opened the season early

The fallen snow led to an earlier opening of the ski resorts in the region. Sugar Bowl, located north of Lake Tahoe, received a foot of new snow and announced it will welcome skiers and snowboarders as early as Friday, the resort's first opening of the season in 20 years.

Another popular resort, Palisades Tahoe, will also open its slopes five days earlier than planned.
